The main event of Super Sunday sees the return of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard to make his managerial debut against another legend in Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Man United vs Chelsea – Premier League 2019/20
Venue : Old Trafford
Date : Sunday , 11 August 2019
Kick-off : 4:30 PM BST
The rebuild is underway at both sides as Manchester United make a big statement after signing two great defenders in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire to solve their defensive issues. However, there are questions to be asked on their midfield, who looks weaker than last season and the replacement of £75m rated Romelu Lukaku. Chelsea on the other hand, face a transfer ban, but, the Blues have been able to bring in Christian Pulisic who they signed back in January and Matteo Kovacic who was registered with the Blues before they had a transfer ban.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær has been trying a 4-2-3-1 formation in pre-season which has got the better out of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Andreas Pereira. Ole's preference at no.9 will be quite interesting to see, we saw Ole play Marcus Rashford up-front last season but he's been experimenting Martial as a no.9 in pre-season. Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has been also experimenting a 4-2-3-1 formation which got the better out of players like Ross Barkley, Christian Pulisic and Matteo Kovacic. The no.9 situation for the Blues is an interesting one with Lampard having plenty of choices to choose form, but for the time being Tammy Abraham's leading to race to be first-choice.
Man United and Chelsea have met each 54 times in the Premier League with the Blues being victorious 18 times. The Red Devils have won 15 times with both team sharing points on 21 occasions.
The last time both teams faced each other was in April at Old Trafford which resulted in a 1-1 draw. Former blue Juan Mata opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the Devils while Marcos Alonso equalised late in the first half after a David de Gea blunder.
Man United's only injury concern remain Eric Bailly who faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines. The rest of the squad is available for the game.
The situation between Paul Pogba and Man Utd remains an interesting one with Pogba earlier in the pre-season mentioning the fact that he wants a new challenge. Though there haven't been concrete offers for the world cup winner, it remains to be seen if Pogba stays with United for another season.
Antonio Rüdiger (knee), Callum-Hudson Odoi (foot) and Reece James (ankle) are nearing their returns but this game is a bit too early for any one of them to feature.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the only long-term injury for the Blues while N'golo Kante will be assessed before the match.
A lot of Man United's hopes depend on their best player Paul Pogba. Pogba was Man United's top-scorer with 13 goals 9 assists. However, with doubts regarding his situation and the departure of Romelu Lukaku much work has to be done by Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. The duo are not the players who score around 15-20 goals a season but they need to be more consistent in order for Man United to have a chance at top 4.
Chelsea, like United are rebuilding their squad and for the first time in years they have a lot of younger players in the squad. The squad does lack some experience but has got a lot of talent. One such guy is Tammy Abraham, the England U-21 international scored 26 goals in the Championship last season and the second time he has scored over 20+ goals in a single season in the Championship. With Tammy set to be first-choice, we hope to see more of him in the Premier League
Man United had their worst defensive season in years as the Red Devils only managed seven clean sheets in the whole season. On top of that, the Red Devils conceded a massive 54 goals, the second most in the top 10 if the Premier League. However, the Red Devils were better in the attacking phase, as they were the 5th best scoring team in the league with 65 goals.
Chelsea had quite a mixed season. The Blues managed to keep the 3rd highest clean sheets in the league behind Liverpool and Man City and conceded the 3rd lowest goals in the league (level with Tottenham). In the attacking phase, the Blues lacked a goal scoring no.9 throughout the season. The Blues scored 63 goals, which could have been quite better given the number of chances created.
Both teams have come from great pre-seasons but while Man United lack the quality in midfield, Chelsea have had their problems in defence. Also the departure of their most experienced defender David Luiz is a big blow for the Blues but you can never count them out. Despite Man United's home advantage, we expect this game to be a draw.
